Chatbase alternatives, sorted by how they charge

Updated 21 September 2026 · prices and features checked 21 September 2026

Chatbase is often the first AI support bot a small business owner finds, and the pricing page is often why they go looking for something else. The alternatives differ less in how well they answer, since most use similar AI models, than in how they charge you and what else they expect you to run. This guide sorts twelve of them by that, so you can shortlist two or three before reading the detailed comparisons.

First, understand what you are paying for

Every tool on this page puts a limit on AI answers, but they count them in different units, and the unit decides whether your bill is predictable.

  • Messages or queries. One visitor question, one answer, one unit. Easy to reason about.
  • Credits. A balance that different AI models and actions use up at different rates. Your plan's number is a ceiling, not a count of answers.
  • Resolutions or outcomes. You pay when the AI resolves a request, not when it merely replies. Fair in principle, but you need to trust how "resolved" is decided.
  • Seats. You pay per person on your team who logs in, and AI usage comes on top.

None of these is wrong. The mistake is comparing a credit price against a message price as if they were the same thing.

Three kinds of alternative

Website answer bots

Botsonic, SiteSpeakAI, Chatling, DocsBot AI, SiteGPT, CustomGPT.ai and Botsmith sit closest to Chatbase. You point them at your website and documents and they answer visitors. The differences are in the meter, the number of bots and team members, what removing the vendor's branding costs, and how many integrations and actions come with each tier. If Chatbase felt right but expensive, start here.

Outcome-priced AI agents

Wonderchat, Tidio's Lyro and Intercom Fin charge for resolutions, conversations or outcomes rather than for every reply. They are built for teams that already run a support operation and want the AI to close tickets, often with actions that update other systems. For a small site with light traffic, a per-outcome price can be cheap; for a busy one, check the monthly minimum and how the vendor decides that something was resolved.

Help desks with AI built in

Crisp and Zendesk are platforms your staff log into every day: shared inboxes, tickets, several channels, reporting. The AI is one feature among many. If you have people answering customers across email, chat and social, these are the category you want, and a standalone answer bot is not a replacement.

How to choose in ten minutes

  1. Decide whether anyone will work an inbox. If yes, look at the help desks and outcome-priced agents. If no, stay with the answer bots.
  2. Estimate your monthly questions. A few hundred a month suits almost anything. Tens of thousands makes per-outcome and per-credit pricing worth modelling carefully.
  3. Price the extras you actually need. Branding removal, a second bot and a second team member are often separate charges, and they add up faster than the plan price.
  4. Check what happens at the limit. Some tools stop answering when you run out; others charge overage. Know which before a busy week.
  5. Run two trials side by side on the same website with the same ten questions, and keep whichever answers more of them correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Chatbase alternative?

By entry price on the vendors' own pages when we checked, Botsonic's lowest plan was $19 billed monthly and Botsmith Starter is US$19 a month, against Chatbase Hobby at $40 per month. The cheapest one for you depends on what you need on top, such as more bots, team members or branding removal.

What is the difference between messages and credits?

A message allowance counts answered visitor questions, so 2,000 messages means about 2,000 answers. A credit balance is used up at different rates depending on the AI model and any actions, so the number of answers it buys varies. Compare them only after converting to answers.

Is a help desk like Zendesk or Crisp a Chatbase alternative?

Only if you have people answering customers. Help desks give your staff a shared inbox, tickets and several channels, with AI as one feature. If nobody will work an inbox, a website answer bot is the closer alternative and costs less.

What happens when an AI chatbot reaches its monthly limit?

It depends on the vendor. Some say the bot stops responding until the next month, and others sell extra messages or credits. Check this on the pricing page before you choose, because a limit reached in your busiest week is the worst time to find out.
