Chatbase and Botsmith both turn a website into an AI chatbot that answers visitors. Chatbase has grown into a broad AI agent platform with integrations, actions and voice. Botsmith does one job: a support bot that answers only from your own site, priced for a small business. Here is how they compare on the things that decide the monthly bill and the day-to-day experience, with Chatbase's prices rechecked on 20 October 2026.

When we checked on 20 October 2026, Chatbase's pricing page opened on yearly billing, with the monthly price shown struck through beside it, and advertised 20% off yearly. The monthly prices are the same as when we first checked on 12 September. What changed in October: the free plan is no longer on the page, Hobby now includes 2 team members, and the branding and extra-agent add-ons are quoted per year instead of per month. The comparison table also lists a separate monthly allowance of test credits. The two products count usage differently: Chatbase sells message credits, while Botsmith counts one message for each visitor question the bot answers.

What each product is built for

Chatbase is aimed at teams that want an AI agent inside a wider support stack. From its Standard plan it lists a helpdesk, voice, telephony, outbound campaigns and API access, plus integrations with tools such as Stripe and Zendesk. If your bot needs to look up an order, open a ticket or call another system, that is the kind of product you need.

Botsmith is aimed at the owner of a small business website who wants visitors' questions answered accurately without building flows or wiring up integrations. You give it your address, it reads your public pages, and it answers from that content. There are three ways to put it in front of customers: a chat bubble on your site from one line of code, a chat link with a QR code that opens straight into the conversation, and automatic replies on a WeChat Official Account for businesses with Chinese-speaking customers.

When Botsmith is the better fit

• One website, a tight budget. Starter gives you 2,000 messages a month for US$19. Chatbase's cheapest paid plan was $40 a month for 700 message credits when we checked.
• You want the badge gone without paying extra. Pro at US$49 a month removes it and includes five bots. On Chatbase, badge removal is a separate add-on at $1188 a year.
• You want a link, not just a widget. Every Botsmith bot has its own chat link and QR code for email signatures, printed materials, social profiles or any place a link can be tapped.
• You want the bot to get better without re-training it. Questions it could not answer are collected in your dashboard. Answer one once and the bot uses your answer from the next message on.
• You would rather not configure anything. There are no flows, prompts or agent settings to learn: add your URL, check a few answers, paste the code.

When Chatbase is the better fit

• Your bot needs to take actions in other systems, or connect to a helpdesk, payments or CRM tool. Botsmith has no integrations or public API today.
• You need voice, phone or outbound messaging. Botsmith is text chat only.
• Several teammates need their own logins to one workspace. Even Chatbase Hobby includes 2 members; a Botsmith account has a single login.
• You expect very high volume and want enterprise terms, security reviews and an account manager.

How Botsmith keeps answers grounded

Before every reply, Botsmith searches your website content for the relevant passages and answers from those. When nothing on your site supports an answer, it says it is not sure and points the visitor to you instead of guessing a price or a policy. You can add owner instructions, such as topics to avoid or what to say about bookings, and verified answers for questions your site does not cover. Answers link back to the pages they came from, so visitors can check for themselves.

What a month costs for a typical small business

Take a local business whose website gets a few dozen chat questions a day, say 1,500 answered questions in a month. On Botsmith that fits inside Starter's 2,000 messages at US$19. On Chatbase, the Hobby plan at $40 includes 700 message credits, so the same month would mean moving up to Standard at $150, or topping up with the $40-per-1,000-credit recharge. How far a credit goes depends on how Chatbase meters your agent, so check its own usage page before you compare. Either way, the difference at this size is the plan, not the features: most small sites use a fraction of what Standard includes.

The picture changes if you need what Chatbase adds on top: several teammates, integrations, actions in other systems or voice.
