Botsmith vs Zendesk AI agents

Updated 21 September 2026 · prices and features checked 21 September 2026

Zendesk is one of the largest customer service platforms in the world, and its AI agents are built to resolve customer requests without a human touching them. Botsmith is a much smaller thing: a bot that reads your website, answers visitors from it, and emails you when someone wants a person. Comparing them is really a question about your business, not about the software, so this page lays out how each one charges, what each one assumes about your team, and where the line between them sits.

Two different charging models

Zendesk charges for two things separately. The first is seats. Its pricing page describes the structure as primarily seat-based, per agent per month, with plan tiers that include different features, and it says the base subscription is determined by your selected plan tier and the number of agent seats needed. The second is AI usage. Zendesk says its AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan, with pricing based on the successful outcomes they deliver, and it defines an automated resolution as the unit of measurement used for calculating and billing AI agent usage.

That outcome-based idea is genuinely attractive at scale. Zendesk describes it as paying only for customer requests that were successfully resolved by the AI agent, without any escalation to a human agent. If a request escalates, you are not billed for a resolution.

Botsmith charges one flat monthly figure with a message count attached, and no seats at all, because there is no agent console for anyone to sit in.

Read the middle column carefully, because it is where most of the difference lives. a per-agent price is charged once for every person who answers customers, so the same plan costs four times as much for a team of four as it does for a team of one. Botsmith Starter at US$19 covers 2,000 messages a month and one bot; Pro at US$49 covers 10,000 messages and five bots, and removes the "Powered by" badge. Neither of us publishes a per-resolution rate for AI, but for opposite reasons: Zendesk prices it on the outcome, and Botsmith does not meter outcomes at all.

We have not written a dollar figure for automated resolutions on this page because the Zendesk pricing page does not publish one, and we do not print numbers we cannot point at.

What comes with each

Even the entry Zendesk plan is a help desk. Its published feature list for Support Team starts with an email and ticketing system, ticket routing, prebuilt analytics dashboards, pre-written responses, customer context, and automations and triggers. Suite Team adds AI agents, an AI knowledge base, an AI action builder, omnichannel routing, messaging and live chat, and telephony. That is a service operation in a box, and it expects an operation to run it.

Botsmith has no tickets, no routing, no phone, no dashboards beyond your conversations, and no seats. It crawls your public pages, takes PDF, Word and Excel uploads for the things that never made it onto the site, answers in whatever language the visitor writes in, and says it is not sure instead of inventing a price or a policy. Questions it could not answer are collected for you, and a rule you write applies to every reply straight away.

Trying each one

Zendesk offers a 14-day trial, and says that during the trial period the default is access to all features on the Zendesk Customer Service Suite Professional plan. Botsmith's trial is also 14 days, limited to 200 messages, with no credit card. The practical difference is how long it takes to see something: a Zendesk trial is worth doing with a plan for who will configure it, while a Botsmith trial is a URL and a five-minute wait.

When Zendesk is the better choice

  • You have a support team, or you are about to have one, and you need tickets, routing and reporting on how they perform.
  • Customers reach you on several channels, including phone, and you need those in one record per customer.
  • You want AI that can take an action in another system, not only answer a question.
  • Volume is high enough that paying per resolved request is cheaper than paying a person to resolve it.
  • You have procurement, security review and integration requirements that a large vendor is set up to answer.

When Botsmith is the better choice

  • You are one to five people and nobody owns a ticket queue.
  • Most of what customers ask is already published on your site, and the cost of not answering at 10pm is a lost enquiry, not an SLA breach.
  • You want a bill that does not move with headcount or with how many questions arrive.
  • You want it working the same afternoon, with one script tag or a shared link.
  • You would rather the bot say "I'm not sure, here is how to reach a person" than attempt a resolution.

The fair warning in the other direction: if you later need a real help desk, you will move to something like Zendesk, and Botsmith will not migrate your history for you, because there is no ticket history to migrate.

Can you run both

Yes, though most businesses that need Zendesk should use its AI agent rather than a second bot on the same page. Where a pairing makes sense is a separate site or audience: a documentation site, a campaign landing page or a printed QR code where a full service platform is more than the job needs. Every Botsmith bot has its own link and QR code that opens directly into the chat, and the widget only runs on the domains you list.

Frequently asked questions

How does Zendesk charge for AI agents?

On outcomes. The Zendesk pricing page says AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan with pricing based on the successful outcomes they deliver, and defines an automated resolution as the unit used to bill AI agent usage. It describes this as paying only for requests the AI agent resolved without escalation to a human.

Is Zendesk more expensive than Botsmith?

For a small business, almost always, because Zendesk is billed per agent seat on top of AI usage. Its published list prices are US$19 agent/month for Support Team, US$55 for Suite Team and US$115 for Suite Professional, all paid yearly. Botsmith charges US$19 or US$49 a month for the whole account with no seats.

Does Botsmith do tickets, email and phone?

No. There is no ticketing, no shared inbox, no routing and no telephony, and you cannot take over a chat and reply as a human. Botsmith answers from your website and uploaded files and emails you the transcript when a visitor leaves their details. A help desk is exactly the gap Zendesk fills.

Do both have a free trial?

Yes, both are 14 days. Zendesk says that during the 14-day trial period the default gives access to all features on its Customer Service Suite Professional plan. Botsmith's trial is 14 days with 200 messages and no credit card required.

Can I start with Botsmith and move to Zendesk later?

You can, and some businesses should. Botsmith answers website questions while you are small; when you hire people to work a queue, a help desk starts to earn its price. Be aware there is no ticket history in Botsmith to bring across, because it does not create tickets in the first place.
