Botsmith vs CustomGPT.ai

Updated 14 September 2026 · prices and features checked 14 September 2026

CustomGPT.ai and Botsmith both answer questions from content you give them, and both show the sources behind an answer. CustomGPT.ai is sold as a platform for many agents, large document libraries and teams that want an API. Botsmith is a single-purpose support bot for a small business website, with plans that start at US$19 a month. If you are choosing between them, the real question is how big your job is.

All CustomGPT.ai figures come from its pricing page when we checked on 14 September 2026. Its query allowance is shared by every agent on the account, so ten agents draw on the same 1,000 queries. Botsmith counts a message each time the bot answers a visitor.

The size of the job

Look at what CustomGPT.ai puts in its cheapest plan: ten agents, thousands of documents per agent, three seats and an API. Its data sources go well past a website. The pricing page lists 1400+ document formats, YouTube videos, audio files and podcasts, and connectors for Zendesk, Confluence, Notion, Google Drive, Shopify and SharePoint. That is a good match for an organisation building several assistants over a large body of material, or a developer building search into their own product.

A typical small business needs something narrower. One website, maybe a price list or a policy document, and one bot on the front page that stops the same five questions landing in your inbox. For that job, most of the Standard plan would sit unused, and the entry price reflects the larger scope.

The money, worked through

Say your site gets around 1,500 visitor questions a month. On CustomGPT.ai that is more than the 1,000 queries included with Standard. Its add-on for 2,500 extra queries is $375 a month, and the Premium plan is $499 a month. Its FAQ also says that once you reach a query limit, the system will stop responding to queries until you move to a bigger plan or add capacity.

On Botsmith, 1,500 questions fits inside Starter at US$19 a month. If you later need up to 10,000 messages, a second bot for another site or no badge, Pro is US$49 a month.

The trials also work differently. CustomGPT.ai asks for card details up front and bills automatically after seven days unless you cancel. A Botsmith trial runs 14 days on 200 messages and never asks for a card, so nothing is charged if you simply stop.

When Botsmith is the better fit

  • You run one website and want a sensible monthly cost. A single bot with 2,000 messages is US$19 a month.
  • You want to test before handing over a card. The 14-day trial needs only an email address.
  • Your content is mostly your site plus a few files. Botsmith reads your public pages and takes PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or CSV uploads for anything that is not online.
  • You want leads, not just answers. When a visitor leaves a name, phone number or email, you get an email within seconds with the whole conversation attached.
  • You want to share the bot beyond your site. Each bot has a chat link and QR code, and it can also reply on a WeChat Official Account.
  • You would like the bot to improve without a project. Questions it could not answer are listed in your dashboard. Answer one, and the bot uses that answer from then on.

When CustomGPT.ai is the better fit

  • You need many assistants. Standard includes 10 agents and Premium 25; Botsmith tops out at 5 bots on Pro.
  • Your knowledge lives in many systems. CustomGPT.ai connects to Confluence, Notion, Google Drive, SharePoint and a Zendesk knowledge base, and can train on video and audio. Botsmith reads websites and uploaded files only.
  • You are building software. RAG API access is part of every CustomGPT.ai plan. Botsmith has no public API.
  • A team shares the work. CustomGPT.ai includes 3 to 5 seats, with extra seats sold as an add-on, and Enterprise adds custom SSO. A Botsmith account has one login.
  • You want Slack as a channel. Slack deployment is listed on its plans. Botsmith works as a website bubble, a chat link or on WeChat.

How a Botsmith answer is put together

Each time a visitor asks something, Botsmith pulls the matching passages from your pages and uploaded files, then writes a reply from those passages with links to where they came from. If your content does not cover the question, the bot tells the visitor it is not sure instead of making up a figure. Rules you write, such as never quoting a delivery date, apply to the very next reply without rebuilding anything. Visitors are answered in whatever language they write in, and the embed code only runs on your own domains.

Trying Botsmith next to CustomGPT.ai

  1. Start a Botsmith trial and point it at your website. Most small sites are ready within minutes.
  2. Upload any documents you had loaded into CustomGPT.ai that are not on your site.
  3. Put the same list of real customer questions to both bots and read the answers side by side.
  4. If Botsmith covers what you need, swap the embed code. The WordPress guide walks through it step by step.
